Dolphins

I was out on the water with my new found friends, the Barrett family and the Adairs. On or about boxing day (hey it is my vacation time so all days blend together) we all went out on Mark’s boat. Shortly after leaving shore we spotted a boat pointing at something. As we neared the guy was yelling “Dolphins!”

As a landlubber I had never seen dolphins in the wild. Mark told me they can be playful and will swim right up to you. We spotted the fins and moved closer. I jumped in the water excited to try this new experience.

Oddly the dolphins moved further away so I climbed back in and we set off after them. We got near and cut the motor and I dove in again. ( a perfect half gainer by the way!! ) Again they moved away. Did a Canuck in the water offend them? Everyone assured me this was not the way they behaved.

We took chase again and this time got close enough to see it was a mother and a fairly new born! The young one was less than a meter long and cute as hell.
That explained the shyness of mother and baby flipper. We decided to give them a wide birth and let mom and baby be.

The chance of seeing dolphins was so exhilarating but to see a baby one, as well, really made it special. Unfortunately they never came close enough for a picture.
I hope to get a chance again to see dolphins and maybe get to swim with them.
Australia is truly a magical place.
