We have a new classic rock station in my city (Calgary). Q107.
Good music, not a lot of gab and even some comedy bytes for the listeners. My beef is that they never identify the comedian. I feel that is a big slap in the face to any artist that is being played.
Sure if it is Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Foxworthy even Bill Cosby, most people can recognize the voice.
What about some of the lesser knowns?
There are many comics I hear on these "comedy on Q" bits that I recognize as I have worked with them or at least seen them. What about the comedy fans that think, "hey this guy is funny. I wonder who it is?"
The comic may have a CD/DVD for sale, an upcoming show, or TV special and unless the audience has heard of them, it is just another joke being exploited. For the record, I have not been featured on this "comedy on Q" but have heard several of my peers.
"So what?" you say. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be if they never told you who played the songs. I know sometimes they don't but for the most part you hear something.
I urge all lovers of comedy to write to the station (or station in their area that is guitly of this) and ask for them to identify the comedian in the bit. I know there are other stations that are using the same recordings as many of them are connected and the comedy is packaged and sold by outside production houses and sold across the country.
Lets try to have the stations pay some respect to the art form and the artist as they do for the musicians.
Is that too much to ask?
It may get more people out to the comedy clubs, which is what stand-up is all about.
For your info the Q107 web site is:
www.q107fm.ca
And if you are ever in Calgary, they are the best station to listen to at night. Availabe on line too. It is not the same old hits played over and over.
Oh yeah the comedy is fresh and repeat free....whoever they are!
