The end of summer

While summer officially ends on some day that scientists made up many years ago. (In fact winter does not officially kick in until Dec 21 yet it is wintery long before that). What do you expect from lab geeks ....accuracy?? They never go outside except to grab samples to scurry back to the lab to study so what do they know.
For society in North America, summer is officially over after the labor day weekend. Like "Bones" McCoy uttering his trademark "He's dead Jim", summer is done after this weekend.

This is always a weird time for me. I love the summer buy never get out to enjoy enough of it. Time, money or lazing at home when it is too hot to do...anything. It just seems to slip away. So the end of summer is like saying good bye to an old friend that you should see more of but personal things prevent you from doing so.
Fall is often my favorite time of the year as I seem to get more done and more things happen in my world. I like the fall because you get a few seasons in one. Often we get the crisp mornings of fall that can turn into hot scorching days. Indian summer was what I called it when I was a kid but in today's screwed up political correctness is it now referred to as "First Nations weather pattern' or can we still call it Indian Summer?? Screw the PC types, it is Indian Summer.
We can get snow and then have warm weather follow hot on its heels to melt the pre-winter cold.
The leaves change and the world has a different scent to it. It is smell of something gone and something to come. It is the fragrance of change and possible things in the future. It is a state in changing flux. This is when nature becomes the most active as all animals get moving on gathering food or getting laid. Yes the rut happens at this time and right now elk, moose and deer are battling it out to see who gets the most of the 4 legged sluts in heat.
Ah nature.

The fall brings more work. It is busy from here until New Years (sometimes a little longer) so we can gather our money nuts for the cold famine of late winter, until spring thaws the gigs out again for the burst of the spring feast. Yes comedy can be cyclical in its eco-system.
Comics are like nature but we each have our own niche. We can gather like squirrels, grabbing every gig we can from this season. Often it is so slow after we ring in the new year that many semi-hibernate like a bear until it picks up. Some comics are now on the prowl for tail, with their new found wealth they can now join the rut and are out to compete for the horny of the herd. I leave that to the young ones as "chick chasing" is a young bucks game. Others just put on winter fat and stay in to escape the cold. Then there are those that stay out for the whole season. Rain, wind, snow or sun, they never come in. Like the lone wolf they are always on the prowl for what they need to survive sometimes even scavenging from outside the comedy food chain (like writing or acting) but still entertainment related. There are those, that resemble rodents, that have a comfy little nest, stealing out occasionally to grab some more supplies before scurrying back in. Never straying far from the food source. Still yet there are others who migrate, like geese, to warmer climes where there is bounty to be had and none of the Canadian winter hardships. This is why I love the fall. We are the fall.

So to celebrate the end of summer, a few of the comics in town, some staff from the club and friends are coming over to my place for a last BBQ of the season. We will cook the flesh of dead animals on the grill, we will drink and party by the fire pit until the chill of the night air drives us inside or to our homes. It will be BYOB, BYOM, BYOP and BYOT but it will be one last kick at summer as we say good bye to the friend we should see more of...but never do.
I will try to remember to get pics to post.
Later kids
