Afterward I spent the rest of the weekend visiting family and loved ones in the Edmonton area. I was taken (note: not invited taken...like a hostage) to a dinner party where I was enlisted (forced) to help make pyrogies!! I have never made them before in my life. I just thought they appeared in ziploc bags in some Baba's freezer. How they came to be has always been a mystery. As long as I could get some to chow down on, I was happy. For all I knew there were magical elves in the freezer just churning these things out.
For those of you not from western Canada or not having had any Ukranian culture introduced into your world...they are very tasty!! I have eaten truckloads of these things in my life yet never had to make them. I just located some Ukranian restaurant or household and dove in with knife and fork! Sour cream and onions piled on thick! MMmm
It was a new experience to see how these tasty morsels come to the table. I did learn one thing. A uniform shape is not as easy as it looks and later we dined on several that looked more like an oversized ravioli than a pyrogy. Still tasty but is it me or does shape add to the flavor?
The one cool thing is pyogies are a social food when it comes to making them. There were 4 of us in the kitchen, covered in flour, beers and wine on the go just cutting, mashing, boiling, kneading and then shaping; laughing and joking the whole time. It was a blast! Who would have thought that prepping tons of food would be such fun?
They are not difficult to prepare but once you mess up the kitchen (and it will get messy)....you might as well make a huge batch to freeze and make a party of it! Unlock the liquor cabinet and jump in and get dirty!
I think I am hooked. I am planning on going to another pyrogy making party (as soon as I find one) and this time...I am stealing some to take home!!
If you want to find the best pyrogies in Canada, I say try Edmonton and Winnipeg first. Then check out Vegerville Alberta and Dauphin Manitoba. Or head up to Glendon and see the giant one on the fork!. Either way, you will have a great meal.

Hey Mack Daddy!
Glad to hear you had fun at the perogie party! I love them too. And you're right, it's definitely a western thing; being from NB, I didn't know what they were until I moved to Cowtown. hehe
For shame on the not calling me back for coffee thing though. Maybe jokegirl is right about you. hehehehe JOKING!
She's full of shit. I've known you for, what?, 8 years now, and you've bought me lunch at least 10 times and have never charged me for gas. And you've never been a letch or a womanizing pig to me.
I'm coming down for the long weekend and we'll hook up for lunch if you're in town. Call me! hehe
Have a good one!

amazing what we can learn if we are open to it. i gotta share a friends' insightful trip thru a "blue" brewery. the guys were loving all the sampling and when they were walking buy the huge steel vats renee' noticed all the bags of detergent being poured into each. He asked if it really took all those bags of detergent to clean the vats each time, then the guy explained that it was added to the brew to give it foam when poured. As they cannot meet supply and demand they can't age it properly so this iz a quicker way of producing the desirable head....and they are in "govt acceptable amounts"! ever had that 'fresh' feeling the next day....me neither why i quit beer. Also on another of your less favored topics i share i was raised on a farm & good beef. we mostly raised and dressed our own but when my dad took me to a veal farm....well everyone who needs education on how things are really made should do some of their own homework. Life is a classroom....if you choose to view it that way!
