What a great weekend. It kicked off with seeing a bunch of old friends. Some where here working gigs while others were not in the industry but in town visiting. Lots of getting together for all to talk of old times and the times to come. Calgary is really becoming the new hub of comedy and has a growing scene of amazing talent. There are also many comics passing through doing shows, that good ol' Cowtown is turning into the hang out area of Alberta and the west.
This past Saturday I had a wonderful corporate show that I performed at the Blackfoot Inn. I have done many shows there before and it is one of the few hotels that has a decent sound system built in. I find it odd that many multi million dollar hotels skimp on their in house system which is tinny at best. Not so with this ball room.
The client was very happy and I expect more leads to come. The audience was bright and quick on the references which is always a treat. At times we must do shows in clubs and bars or for sporting fund raising events where many in the crowd are hammered and not the best group for cleverly written material. This group, however, was not in that category and was a joy to perform for, almost effortless.
After I poppped into the Comedy Cave, Calgary's number one independent comedy club, to see my good buddy Jocko Alston. The place was packed and they asked that I do a quick guest spot. The energy of the room was awesome and resulted in me picking up a few business cards afterward that I think will pay off on more corporate work.
Jocko ripped the room up as he always does.
My show in Lake Chaparral on Thursday went very well and there will be more shows out that way for folks in the deep south of cowtown.
It is a cool intimate room and a fun place to perform. They also have the best deal on perogies I have ever seen! More to come!!
A busy week lies ahead. I am off to meet with some of my new agents and tie up a few deals.
Monday nights I can often be found at the open mic room of Dickens Pub along with many other comics and budding comics.
9th Ave and 9th Street SW
(403) 233-7550
The fun kicks off at 8pm
See you there.
