I did a show, in Medicine Hat, for a company called Encana, on the weekend. A great company and a cool event. They treated me very well and all the staff seem to love working for them.
Besides myself they had a band hired and a surprise musical guest, Kalan Porter, the winner of the "Canadian Idol" contest (CTV Television).
Now to be honest I had never watched one episode of Canadian Idol or Amercian Idol for that matter as I always thought they were nothing more than a bunch of glorified Karaoke singers doing cover tunes. That horrible William Hung was what I thought the shows were all about. When Hung sang on Amercian Idol I believe that is what Don Mclean meant in his lyrics "the day the music died".
Needless to say, I was not an avid watcher of the shows.
When they announced Kalan, the place went nuts! I had no idea that he hailed from Medicine Hat. How is that for bieng out of the loop?!
So I figured, lets listen to this kid.
I was blown away! He did a couple of cover tunes and a few originals. I have to say this kid has a great voice and is definately going to go places!
I met him later and he is soft spoken but a nice fellow. It was a pleasure to share the stage with him and I wish him all the success in the world!
